Navigating Networking as an Introvert: My Experience at the East Yorkshire Business Expo

As the owner of Blue Deer Creative, a business that thrives on helping small and start-up businesses with website design, social media management, and digital marketing, it’s essential for me to attend events like the East Yorkshire Business Expo. It’s a fantastic opportunity to connect with other local businesses, build partnerships, and showcase my services. But as an introvert, networking can often feel overwhelming and intimidating.

This week, I had the pleasure of exhibiting at the Expo held at the Mercure Hotel in Willerby, and while I can confidently say it was a highly enjoyable experience, there’s no denying the internal hurdles I faced as an introvert in a bustling, fast-paced environment.

The Introvert’s Challenge: Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone

For those of us who are naturally more reserved, making ourselves seen and heard at events like these can be a real challenge. I’ve always found comfort in working behind the scenes, crafting beautiful websites and engaging digital content, rather than standing in the spotlight. Walking into a room full of strangers, all confident in their own pitch, can leave me questioning how best to present myself and my business.

But I’ve learned that while introversion might make networking more difficult, it doesn’t make it impossible. Instead, it offers an opportunity to approach networking in a different, more thoughtful way.

The Positive Side of Introverted Networking

At the East Yorkshire Business Expo, I focused on one thing: authenticity. I didn’t need to be the loudest or the most visible. Instead, I leaned into what I do best—listening and engaging one-on-one. The quieter, more personal conversations allowed me to build deeper connections and really understand the needs of the businesses I spoke with.

The event was filled with inspiring local entrepreneurs, and it was incredibly motivating to see so many passionate individuals showcasing their hard work. It reminded me that I’m not alone in facing the struggles of running a small business and that there’s a vibrant, supportive community right here in East Yorkshire.

Finding Confidence in the Small Wins

While I may not have been the most vocal exhibitor, I left the Expo with a renewed sense of confidence. Each conversation I had was meaningful, and each connection felt like a step in the right direction for Blue Deer Creative. Networking doesn’t have to mean being the centre of attention. For introverts like me, it can mean quietly making an impact, building relationships that last, and finding your place in the business community in your own unique way.

A Note About the Photo

In keeping with my introverted nature, you won’t see me in the photo of my exhibition stand. While I’m proud of the work I do and the presence I brought to the Expo, I’ve always been a little too self-conscious about my appearance to feel comfortable in front of the camera. It’s something many introverts can relate to—the preference to stay behind the scenes rather than be front and centre.

Conclusion: A Highly Enjoyable Experience

All in all, the East Yorkshire Business Expo was a great success, both personally and professionally. It reminded me that while introversion can make networking a bit more daunting, it also gives us the power to connect with others. For anyone who shares these struggles, my advice is simple: take it one conversation at a time, focus on what you’re good at, and remember that every connection you make is a step forward for your business.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue building these relationships and supporting small businesses across the UK with their digital needs. And I’ll definitely be attending more events in the future—introverted quirks and all!
